Welcome to Erin’s cottage

Jim and Karen look forward to extending you a very warm welcome to our cottage in the tranquil hamlet of Sunderland Bridge on the outskirts of Durham city.

Erin’s cottage is furnished to a high and comfortable standard. It has one bedroom and consequently we do not take children nor pets. Situated in the country, yet only three miles from Durham City which can be reached by car, bus or, if you are fit, by a picturesque riverside walk.

A complimentary welcome hamper is provided consisting of milk, eggs, tea, coffee, fruit juice, sugar, bread, croissants, cheese, biscuits and bottle of wine.

The cottage is centrally heated by gas with double glazing throughout making it comfortable all year round.

Durham attracts thousands of tourists to the historic cathedral which opened in 1133. The cathedral boasts an exhibition area housing artifacts and manuscripts from its long history.  The nearby Norman castle, once home to the Prince Bishops and now providing student accommodation and the museum of Archaeology also on Palace Green both deserve a visit. The city naturally has many bars and restaurants together with a cinema, leisure centre and theatre. The University students bring a vibrancy to the city and visitors can enjoy their activities whether it be sport or drama. Residents and visitors are actively encouraged to attend. On the outskirts of town you will find the University’s Botanic Gardens and close by the Oriental Museum. Crook Hall and Gardens are a short walk from the centre of town

After careers in banking and commerce, Jim and Karen decided to become self-employed and established Cathedral View Town House in Durham City in 2000. The Guest house was the first in Durham to achieve 5 star accreditation with a Silver award by Visit England. Other accolades were a Visit England Breakfast award and entries in Michelin Red Book, Lonely Planet and Rick Steves travel guides.

After 15 successful years and with many regular guests, it was time to retire and take life a little easier, moving to their present home in Sunderland Bridge. The timing was perfect as their only son married shortly afterwards and they now have two young children with attendant childminding duties.

When a cottage came up for sale in the village, Karen considered that it would make a suitable home for her elderly mother and purchased it. Mother decided that she preferred to stay where she was, preferring the perceived warmer climate of Oxfordshire. Consequently, the property has found its new use as a holiday cottage.
